How to color the Stampin’ Up! Sunflower Embossing Folder for Creative Crafters

Create this card using the Sunflower Embossing Folder by Stampin' Up! and Debbie Mageed at Secrets to Stamping

Hi, Stampers!

A new Creative Crafters Challenge starts today and the theme is “Anything Goes” as always. I always look forward to sharing with you what I have been working on and today it’s two cards that I think I finally got right. Have you ever been stymied with making a card with something that you know will look beautiful but can’t make it work? Well, that was my issue with the Sunflower Embossing Folder. I finally decided that I was looking at the wrong side of the embossed paper! The embossed side is absolutely gorgeous but to color it like I did, you use the other side – the debossed side. I love how these two cards turned out and you will want to try it, too.

My Secrets!

Let’s start with the card base…

  • I have two A2 cards, with the card base for one being cut to 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 and scored at 4-1/4. The second one is top folding so the paper measures 11 x 4-1/4 and scored at 5-1/2. It doesn’t matter which one you do – pick your favorite!

And now, the fun part!

  • I have to say that the moment I saw the Sunflower embossing folder I loved it. But then, I tried using it and nothing suited my card style. Then, I saw Patty Bennett’s blog post and video and that helped me tremendously get over the creative block.
  • One of the things I did was using the mini ink spots that I get in my Paper Pumpkin kits. The felt pads work much better than the foam ones that we currently have in stock. So, I used the Early Espresso mini ink spot on the debossed side of the Sunflower embossing folder and lightly rubbed it along the paper, making the outlines of the flowers stand out as well as the background areas between the flowers.
  • After that, I began coloring the flowers and leaves with Stampin’ Blends (colors are listed below). I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to color them though. You can use whatever coloring method you enjoy!
  • Card #1: Once the coloring was complete, I stamped the sentiment from In Your Words stamp set in Mossy Meadow ink and cropped it out with the Perennial Postage die. Then, it was layered onto Mossy Meadow cardstock. I layered the Mossy Meadow and Gold Trim onto the card and popped up the sentiment panel on top.
  • Card #2: Once the coloring was complete, I tied the Daffodil Delight Satin Ribbon around the panel and glued it to the card base. Then, I stamped the sentiment from the Peace on Earth stamp set in Early Espresso ink and cropped it out with the Perennial Postage die.

Then, on the inside…

  • Both cards got a layer of Daffodil Delight cardstock and white cardstock that was cut with the Perennial Postage die. The sentiment from the In Your Words stamp set was stamped before adhering the panel to the inside of the card.

Thanks for scrolling to the end!

Noah, who just got an unintentional buzz cut, loves to draw but still finds it difficult. So, I got him the Junior Spirograph and he just loves it! He is definitely a crafty boy and I am so happy about that!

  1. This is one of the most gorgeous cards I’ve seen using the EF. CASEing!! I scrolled all the way to the end and I love how you are encouraging Noah. I like his accidental cut too. Have a blessed day, my friend.

  2. Genius to use a stampin’ spot for highlights! (I hadn’t really noticed those 2 spiny leaves on top until now) I really like card number 2 the best and will need to try your little trick! (and yay on the Spirograph, I loved mine as a kid!)

  3. What a great technique and both versions turned out absolutely beautiful! Noah’s buzz cut looks cute and so glad he’s enjoying crafting! I still have my children’s spirograph kit in the basement. Can’t part with it for some reason!
Thanks so much for sharing at my Garden Party!

  4. Beautiful Autumnal Sunflowers Debbie, many thanks for joining us at Allsorts and We Love Stamping challenges. You’ve also given me a great idea for GGD Margo, she’s a similar age to Noah.

  5. Beautiful cards, Debbie! I love the Sunflower Embossing Folder and the sentiments you used. Luckily Noah’s hair will grow out soon. In the meantime, he can enjoy the Junior Spirograph. He will be helping you make cards before long. Enjoy your weekend, my friend.

  6. I really love the way your cards came out. I will try doing this with the Cajun Craze and Crushed Curry and early expresso.

  7. Absolutely beautiful! And love the tip to look outside the box! Thank you for all you pass on to those of us that can do it but have to have some help getting the process going. I make many people happy because of you and people like you. Thank you once again!

  8. Beautiful card! Thanks so much for a beautifully crafted submission to our challenge at A Place to Start!
