Easy Explosion Card for the Fun Fold Blog Hop

Welcome to the Fun Folds Blog Hop with Independent Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators!!

Hi, Stampers! Fun folds make every handmade card extra special, and today’s blog hop is FULL of great ideas! Whether you’re looking for a unique way to surprise someone or just want to try something new, you’re in for a treat. I’ve teamed up with very creative SU demonstrators to bring you a lineup of creative, must-try designs. My card today will be a hit for anyone you wish to give it to because who doesn’t love a pop-up explosion when they open a card! I have made this type of card a few times, but it’s been a while, so here it is again! This time there are no stamps involved and just a bit of ink. The rest of the products are ready to go to keep it fast and easy, too. Patty Bennett has a recent blog post on making this card with a video. You can also follow along with my instructions below for my card today.

Create this explosion card using Stampin' Up! products by Debbie Mageed at Secrets to Stamping

My Secrets!

Let’s start with the card base…

  • Card Base: cardstock, cut to 8-1/2 x 4-1/4, and scored at 4-1/4
  • I used a panel for the front that has cardstock, cut to 4 x 4 and DSP, cut to 3-7/8 x 3-7/8
  • Inside Panels: I wanted to cover the inside with cardstock, but this is optional! I cut the two pieces of DSP, measuring 4-1/8 x 4-1/8.
  • Explosion DSP: 6 x 6, score in half in both directions, then score diagonally in only one direction
  • I put the layers onto the front and inside first.
  • The explosion layer must be scored well, folded into a small square, and burnished at the edges.
  • Then, align the points of the explosion paper to the top, bottom, and the center scoreline. Once I knew where it needed to go, I added liquid glue to one end and closed the card on top of it. Once that was where I wanted it and dry, I repeated the process with the other side.

Now, the FUN Part!

  • Wasn’t that easy?! It really is, so don’t overthink it.
  • Once that was done, I started with the front panel, and since I had just received the Covered in Flowers Accents in my last order, I wanted to give it a go. So, I started with the flowers and the long leafy branch. In the end, I cut a few of the leaves off to put them in other places so they would be seen instead of covered by the flowers. I sponged a bit of Lost Lagoon ink to the centers of the flowers and added the Flat Pearls to the centers. Then, I popped them up over the leaves with dimensionals.
  • As you see from the inside of the card, I got out another pack that I have had for a bit and not used at all. The Days Like This Memories & More Card Pack is full of spring! I cut out one of the small butterflies and popped it up with dimensionals.
  • I was wanting a thank you card but couldn’t find one that looked good, so I looked at my dies and found the perfect one in the Paper Pumpkin Thanks & Beyond dies. As I usually want to do, I cut two in white cardstock and glued them together. Then, they were glued to the card base.

Then, on the inside…

  • To cover the flat ends of the explosion fold, I cut another one of the Days Like This Memories & More card pack with the Stylish Shapes squares. Then, I cut another one with one of the circle dies and popped it up over the square.
  • For the other side, I have left it blank for now but cut Cloud Cover cardstock with the square Stylish Shapes die. I cut white cardstock (2-5/8 x 2-5/8) to cover it and have only added temporary glue to the center so I can remove it to write a personal message.
  • I wanted to add some more butterflies, so I cut out another butterfly from the Days Like This card pack and popped it up with a dimensional. Then, I remembered that the Beautiful Butterflies bundle is on the Last Chance list, so I added a white butterfly to pop on the dark DSP and cut another one from the DSP used for the explosion panel.
  • Finally, I added more Flat Pearls to the butterflies to give them some sparkle.

Thanks for Scrolling to the End!

If you look at this photo, you will notice something is missing. What is it? SNOW! The ground was saturated, but it was warm enough to get the boys out to have some fun. Even though the weather has gotten cold again, one thing we know in the north is that you enjoy every good day you can. How is the weather in your neck of the woods? I’d love to hear what you are enjoying right now.

  1. Debbie, I love this beautiful card and fun-fold design. As for our weather in Delaware, the blizzard hit us on Sunday, but the roads are clear now, and we will be able to make our appointments. I love your boys having fun outside on a nice day!

  2. It’s always a pleasure to see one of your gorgeous special fold cards, Debbie. I especially love the green/teals on this one. Those beautiful white flowers really pop against the darker background. Thanks for sharing with A Cut Above’s February Challenge.

  3. So beautiful explosion card. Thanks for the superb and easy project. The weather in Quebec Canada, is cold, and we have snow. Last week we got some sunny and warmer temperatures (-2 C) but the cold came back fast, and we should get snow tonight!

  7. This fun fold definitely has a WOW factor! Between the dramatic colors and the surprise explosion inside, it’s going to be one the recipient holds onto and displays!

The boys looks so happy to be outside! This yo-yo weather has been crazy, but there have been hints of sunshine and spring! Have a great weekend!

  8. Oh my gosh, this card took my breath away! The rich, elegant colors on the outside, the springy look on the inside. So clean and (again) elegant. That “thanks” die is worth its weight in gold!
