Stampin’ Up! Sunset Coast Fun Fold Card for Creative Creases #115

It’s time for a new Creative Creases challenge! Whether you’re a seasoned cardmaker or just getting started, I hope this inspires you to play along.

I found the most interesting fun fold lately and knew that I had to try it. The Triple Panel Pop-out fold was lots of fun to make and was perfect to showcase the incredible new Sunset Coast bundle. This bundle is available for purchase on May 5th, and I’m sure it’s going to be a huge hit, especially with summer just around the corner. My husband always gets a nautical birthday card, so with his birthday coming up in July, I thought this suite of products would be perfect for him.

Fun folds are becoming increasingly popular. If you are ready to give one a try, let me know in a comment below. I’m more than happy to help you figure out how to get one started today!

My Secrets!

Let’s start with the card base…

  • I used this tutorial by Glenda Mollett. She has a video that is helpful to watch. However, I will give you the dimensions I used. I would recommend using mine because I found an error in her measurements after wasting a bit of cardstock.
  • Card Base: 11 x 4-1/4 and scored at 5-1/2
  • Side Panels: Cardstock – 4-1/4 x 6-1/2, scored at 1-1/2, 3-1/4, and 4-3/4 (2)
  • Middle Panel: Cardstock – 4-1/4 x 8-1/2, scored at 1-3/4, 2-1/2, 3-1/4, 5-1/4, 6, 6-3/4
  • DSP: My “OCD” wanted the paper pattern to be continuous across the card (TOTALLY not necessary). I thought I would go ahead and give you the sizes going from left to right just in case you choose a patterned paper that needs it.
  • So, cutting your 4″ paper in the following order for the left side panel: 1/2, 1/2, 1-1/2
  • After that, to cover the sides of the middle panel: 1/2, 1/2, 1/2, 1/2
  • Then, for the right side panel, cut your paper to 1-1/2, 1/2, 1/2
  • My middle panel is in a different paper and measures 4 x 1-3/4. (So, if you are using the same paper, cut it after finishing the left side panel if you want the pattern to be continued across the card.) My middle panel was cut from cardstock, dry embossed in the Soft Waves embossing folder. Then, I swiped it with Versamark ink for a subtle color change.
  • IMPORTANT: Once the DSP panels were all glued onto their cardstock panels, I glued the backs of the panels to close them, so they were glued and allowed to dry while laying flat to make sure they would fit in an envelope. The panels on the ends have one end longer than the other. Make sure to add glue on the outside edge for the shorter end and on the inside of the longer end to adhere the panel closed.
  • Once that was done, I glued the left and right panels down, using the edge on each side as my guide, then added the middle panel in between them.

Now, the FUN part!

  • OK, I really enjoyed making this wonderful fun fold. Now, what do I put on it? Full confession, I had a totally different focal image on the middle panel. After receiving my latest (THIRD) preorder, I ripped it off and started over with the Sunset Coast bundle. No regrets!
  • I cut the fantastic Sunset Coast die with the sailboat. It’s great, but I thought it would be a bit fragile, so I decided to take just the sailboat and the waves from the die cut. Once that was done, I used the Spotlight on Nature circle die to cut more of the Waterside Retreat paper. I glued it to the middle panel and added the sailboat (with dimensionals) and waves (with glue).
  • Then, I stamped the “Happy Birthday” from The Right Words stamp set in Misty Moonlight ink and punched it out with the Three Banner Punch.
  • I almost thought this card front was finished, but then the side panels were just too bare for me. So, I stamped the little sailboats and cut them out with the coordinating die. Finally, I cut out a couple of the seagulls from the DSP for a little life on the card.
  • Now that I have made this fun fold, I think next time I will not use the 11 x 4-1/4 card base. It stands up well on its own, so putting a personal message on the back would be sufficient. Stay tuned!

Then, on the inside…

  • The inside has a piece of the pretty DSP cut to 5 x 3-7/8.
  • I stamped the sentiment from The Right Words to finish the card.
